JFL Division One League Final

Lisgoold 2-7 (13)

Glenbower Rovers 0-12 (12)

At Killeagh

Thurs 9th Oct 2014

History was made in Killeagh last Thursday evening as Lisgoold captured their first ‘A’ grade title in the clubs history. It was a tough dogged affair from started to finish but we raced into a 1-3 to 0-0 score lead with the evergreen Jer O’Connell getting our first green flag and John Cashman getting a few minors. Cathal Cashman should have got second goal only minutes later but wasn’t able to convert. Glenbower rattled by this, rose to the occasion and fought back defiantly and went to score a good few points. It was a good battle in the first half with that well taken goal a deceive factor to leave us 1-5 to 0-6 at the short whistle, with our defence being solid with Moss O’Connell, Brendan Flynn and John O’Shea stepping up to the mark.

At the resumption Glenbower started strongly like Lisgoold did in the first half and piled on the pressure after ten minutes it was 1-5 to 0-8. Lucky to be holding out against Glenbower, who made some excellent scoring chances but didn’t take them, our forwards plundered again. John Cashman combining well with John Cronin for a few scores which seemed to have settled the team coupled with a fantastic performance from John McCarthy ‘supermac’ who inspired all around him, as the lads took the game to Glenbower. This didn’t affect Glenbower Rovers though, who got into their stride and had it not been for a lack of accuracy in front of goal from Glenbower they could and should have been further ahead entering the last ten minutes. Such was the constant pressure from our lads it restricted them to creating numerous wides.

One point in arrears (1-7 to 0-11) it seemed we were heading for heartbreak yet again. However, one has felt in the last few months that a corner has been turned, and luck is now on our side and last Thursday night proved no different. In any sportsman’s career, comes moments they cherish, some historic and some allows them to write their name in the history books. For young Darragh Fleming it was the latter, deep into injury time a cross-field pass by John McCarthy was dummed by Cathal which ended up to Darragh. Darragh’s shot which fooled the keeper (and in truth the entire ground!!) nestled in the corner of the net. We were two points ahead, and Rovers stormed up the field and were rewarded a 20 yard free. Strangely, they elected to go for a point and that was the last action of the game. History was made as the Bishop Roche Cup was making its way to the club for the first time. Captain Moss O’Connell gave a grand speech, and a good night was had by all. It was back to the village, where celebrations lasted for a good wee while, with the cup and ‘Flemings finish’, the toast of the parish. Next up is a County League Quarter-final vs the north cork side Killavullen. Well done lads – well done indeed.

County Football League Q-Final

Lisgoold 1-10 (13)

Killavullen 2-8 (14)

At Carrignavar

Sun 12th Oct 2014

After our bit of history last Thursday, last Sunday saw our bow in this competition as league champions. In what was a hard, tough game, we just came up short. The north cork men got a wonderful start as they plundered 1-2 to a solidary score from John Cashman. Their goal a small bit fortunate as our full back line was caught out in position, but we had plenty time to recover. We got back in bit by bit, with John Cashman, John McCarthy ‘Supermac’, Seamus McSweeney and John Cronin stepping up. A gret effort from that quartet made it 1-3 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes. They scored a wonderful second goal with ten minutes left and apart from a score from John Cashman we were staring at the bottom of the barrel, and in for a right hammering it was 2-6 to 0-4 at half time.

However, there has been a change in character in this squad in their last few games (both first and second teams) and what they produced in the second was a terrific performance. It was gutsy, skilful and saw the team produced a wonderful team performance when they stood up to the physicality of the Killavullen men. John Cronin got the revival under way with a score and followed by a John McCarthy Point. More changes were made in the forwards and these worked a treat as constant bombardment rained on the Killavullen goal. Brendan Flynn latched on to a ball from John Cronin, which was won by excellent work from Jamie, and Subs Jer & Moss to raise a green flag. Our tails were up and the opposition knew it. The fact, constant fouling was coming from them was a sign of they were in trouble. Also the fact they were restricted to just two points in the half showed we had turned the tables around. However try as hard as they could the lead we craved for could not be got and even though some wonderful scores by Jer, John Cronin closed the gap, that one point difference remained. We had some good opportunities to go ahead but they weren’t taken.

Kilavullen held out and we wish them well in the remainder of the competition, as for Lisgoold we can reflect on a second half that was beyond Junior A championship standard in East Cork. One does wonder, if this was produced in March would the squad have another medal in the back pocket. However that is in the past and it’s onwards and upwards. With the vibrant juvenile club now, hoovering up silverware and appearing in several regional finals coupled with the junior squad now getting that ‘winning feeling’ the future is looking very bright for this club.

Team: Ciaran Cronin, John O’Shea, Eoin O’Sullivan, Seamus McSweeney, Brendan Flynn, Moss O’Connell, Noel Connery, John McCarthy, John Cronin, Denis O’Brien, John Cashman, Kieran O’Shea, Patrick O’Mahony, Jer O’Connell, Jamie Woods.

Scorers: John Cashman 0-4, Brendan Flynn 1-0, John Cronin, Jer O’Connell, John McCarthy 0-2 each.

Subs Used: Andrew O’Donovan, Jer O’Connell, Moss Mulcahy, Kieran Barry, Peter Leahy.

Eoin McCarthy Cup Final

Lisgoold 0-29 (29)

Donoughmore 0-19 (19)

At Donoughmore

Sun 12th 2014

The minor hurlers captured this cup after a super team performance, last Sunday morning. They rocketed into a four point lead buthe hosts bounced back. Kieran Cashman at midfield, Caoimhán and Ciaran O’Shea in Attack, coupled with a tigerish Fergal Roche and Darragh Fleming in defence we were doing well. Lisgoold were more than a match for their opponents. It was a nip in tuck encounter with only a couple points in it going into the last twenty minutes. However our fitness, accuracy and teamwork won the day and Darragh Fleming capped a great week with collecting the cup on behalf of the players. Well done Lads.

Round 3 of the 2014 football campaign for the girls & boys of Ballincurrig NS against Gaelscoil Pheig Sayers, took place last Tuesday 7th Oct. Girls were first to take to the pitch and it was tight affair up to half time, but in the second half the opposition got the breaks. The Ballincurrig girls went down fighting, never giving up, losing out on a score line of 2-01 to 4-06. The boys then took to the field and got to grips with the game right from the off and put in a good display maintaining their 100% record, finishing up on a score line of 6-00 to 2-01. Great effort from all involved, well done players & coaches.
