2008 Issue 6

With our Championship encounter against Castlemartyr on Patricks' weekend fast approaching, our progress was further advanced with a solid and hard fought victory over a strong Youghal side on Friday night, when our trip to the seaside yielded the two valuable league points on offer. League Div II - Lios gCul 1-08 Youghal 1-07
A workman like approach to this tough tie yielded both points at a blustery and heavy Youghal venue on Friday night last. With three weeks to the Championship opener, Donal Woods and his management team are anxious to develop a settled side whilst, at the same time, are equally anxious to afford the opportunity for some players to stake down a starting position. With one eye on Castlemartyr, Donal achieved both objectives in the visit to Youghal, and gained the two precious league points at the same time. The opening 20 minutes of this encounter was, in the opinion of most observers, on a par with a standard much higher than Junior. Quick interpassing and speedy thought added to an entertaining opening moiety where both sides played swift attacking play, at the end of which we led by five points. Noel Connery chipped in with his standard point per game, and each of the full forward line contributed from play, with Ciaran Cronin's quick distribution assisting the younger players around him. Man of the match was the diminutive Patrick O' Mahony on the ‘40’, through whom every Lisgoold attack seemed to be channelled. Patrick was the fulcrum of the attack, and he hoovered up ‘carpet ball’ with a careless abandon, and rarely used possession wastefully. His quick thinking following being fouled created a goal opportunity for Wayne Kingston whose rasper almost dislodged the netting from its secure moorings at the bottom goal. Team: Noel Connery, Ciaran Cronin, John Cronin, Jamie Hurley, Wayne Kingston, John Paul O' Brien, Jer O' Connell, Maurice O' Connell, Patrick O’ Mahony, Kevin O’ Shea, Kieran O' Shea, Michael O' Shea, Eoin Riordan, J P Rohan, Charles Smart.
