A fantastic weekend of success last weekend, with victory in each of the three games, across both codes, played. Congrats to Gerry Ryan and his team on the great start to the hurling year, not only with success on the field, and not only with large numbers attending the game, but with the quality of the standard and style produced for the first outing of the year. Hurling Challenge - Lios gCúl 0-14 Knockaneen 0-11
A positive start to the year, where, powered by strong performances from the free scoring Moss O'Connell and powerful displays from the impressive Wayne Kingston and Jonathon O'Shea in a dominant half forward line secured a deserved victory over our visitors from Co. Limerick. Manager Gerry Ryan's commitment to a solid mix of youth and experience saw the introduction of John Cronin (who notched a solid point from a difficult angle following his being called to the fray), as well as Conor Walsh, and Robert Smart. This augurs well for the future, as does the strength of the spine of our defence where Ciaran Cronin, Barry Stack and Charles Smart were the pick of the sextet. Team: Noel Connery, Ciaran Cronin, Owen Hegarty, Jamie Hurley, Wayne Kingston, Denis O' Brien, Jer O' Connell, Maurice O' Connell, Patrick O’ Mahony, Noel O‘ Riordan Jonathon O'Shea, Kevin O’ Shea, Eoin Riordan, Charles Smart, Barry Stack. Football League Div II - Lios gCúl 2-09 Russell Rovers 0-05
A brace of league points were the spoils at stake in Shanagarry, and our side took the points with a hard fought and well deserved victory over the hosts on a perfect sod. At times our effective and speedy inter linked play saw us dominate all quarters of the field, and our resolute defence, led admirably by the very impressive Charles McCarthy and the solid JPR in goals repelled repeated offences from our hosts. Our forward division was potent yet again, and are developing a formidable understanding, with Kevin Shea notching another beauty of green flag. Other forwards to impress included Wayne Kingston whose duo of white flags included one scorcher which was the best score of the encounter, as well as the tigerish Ciaran Cronin whose constant ‘showing for’ the ball created many opportunities for his offensive colleagues as well as creating options for those further out the field. Impressive debuts from John Cronin and Conor Walsh, when introduced in the early stages of the second half, will surely keep the more senior colleagues on their toes, and their performances were capped by a superb 1.01 from Johnsy. Team: Noel Connery, Ciaran Cronin, Jamie Hurley, Wayne Kingston, Charles McCarthy, Jer O' Connell, Maurice O' Connell, Patrick O’ Mahony, Kevin O’ Shea, Kieran O' Shea, Mike O' Shea, Eoin Riordan, J P Rohan, Charles Smart, Paul Stack. Football League Div III - Lios gCúl 1-06 Dungourney 0-08
Completing the trio of victories on this past weekend were Tim Mulcahy's side who recorded a narrow victory at Clonmult Park over hosts Dungourney. The crucial score, a fine individual goal notched by big Patrick Connery was just reward for his all round athletic and dominant midfield performance. Ably assisted by the mobile and robust Finbarr Brosnan, their central domination created ample opportunities for our inside forwards where Owen Hegarty was the pick of the impressive bunch. Robert Smart was introduced also for an impressive debut, whilst the majestic display by Michael Beirne on the ‘40’, where he notched three points in a man of the match performance, drove those around him to the slenderest of victories. Team: Michael Beirne, Finbarr Brosnan, Tomas Coleman, Patrick Connery, Owen Hegarty, Charles McCarthy, Maurice Mulcahy, Denis O'Brien, Paul O’ Brien, Noel O’ Riordan, Michael O'Shea, J P Rohan, Darren Stack, Paul Stack, Conor Walsh.
